Violet was a hard working and generous woman. Despite her humble economic beginnings, Violet applied her strong work ethic and while following the tradition of the strong women that preceded her, defied conventions of the day and established two general merchandise stores. With her husband, Harry P. Gormley, Violet amassed a considerable estate which greatly benefitted her two daughters and subsequent generations. The day before Violet died, she delivered food baskets with goods from her store to needy families that she knew as regular customers, in an area extending from Cades Cove all the way to Rockford, TN. The next morning she didn't wake up. It was December 23, 1964; Violet was 53 years old.

[Per Pirate99: "unsure of year of death, could be 1963 but she was 54
