Didn't know anything about his father's people, except his daddy who died when he was 3 yrs old. His daddy was a fireman and died of diabetes. He also worked at Brookside Mill. And then got a job at Alcoa and got a company house to live in on Edison Street. He paid about $4 - $6 a month in rent. "the Mule Barn" was a store associated with Alcoa where you could buy home furnishings. Daddy bought all kinds of applicances (iron, ironing board, mixer, so that it would show the company that he was planning to stay with them for a long time. At that time nearly all the houses in Alcoa were owned by the company. Harry and Violet had been living on Edison Street some time before Helen moved in with them in 1941. Harry and Violet bought a house on Glascock Street in Alcoa several years later. Individual: Gormley, Harry Birth date: Sep 28, 1903 Death date: Oct 1972 ZIP Code of last known residence: 37886 Walland, Tennessee From Allen Gormley Powlus, Harry's Father died before he was age 11. Mother remarried or had divorced and married Ben Woods. Alleen tells that Ben Woods was so jealous that he forbade Maud to see her son so he was abandoned in Phili and raised by his GREAT grandmother who had no source of income. Alleen speculates that Pete may have sent some money to help raise the child but he grew up in poverty. However, somehow Harry is supposed to have been close to his mother Maud and her husband Ben until their deaths around 1944. From Helen Gormley Caldwell 14 Feb 1999: Harry Gormley's half brother, Hayes (or Haze) lived in Toledo. She supposes her parents met in Toledo when Violet Vars was in Toledo looking for (or having) work there. Toledo was an auto manufacturing town and lots of people from TN went to Toledo for work. Helen recalls visiting Toledo, stopping to visit Hayes. They were Catholic.
Alleen says Harry was sick with a cold as a child on what was to be the day of his baptism. He didn't get baptised and therefore was not a practicing or any kind of Catholic. (12/2000) References
