Helen's account: Had the land that became Army and Navy Drives. He and Granny worked at Brookside mill for years. His mother was living -- Granny and him divorced when Helen was a baby. Had property in Knoxville, plus the farm where Granny lived in Blount Co. (100 acres) -- she got that, he kept the land in Knox. Bought acreage out on Brown's Mountain, then sold it. Bought acreage in 1944/1945 down where Army/Navy Drive. Had it subdivided. Had a few lots left when he died, which were divvied up as part of his estate. Helen says she saw Sam's dad one time. He was called Jim and he was coming from Sweetwater where he had relatives and was returning home. She says he was really old then and died shortly after that. Helen was livign on Edison Street so it was 1939-1941, before the War. She remembers being on rollerskates on Edison street when they announced it on the radio that war had been declared.
