Obituary for Violet Evelyn (Cathcart) White, 2019-2004 (Written by her daughter, Gail Slemmer, in 2015) Violet Evelyn Cathcart was born November 15, 1919, in Las Animas, Colorado, the second daughter of Emma Orphania (Clayton) Cathcart and Frank “Wayne” Cathcart, homesteaders in Bent County. The Cathcarts had come to the Dry Land from Decatur County, Kansas, in a covered wagon in 1915. A bright student, Vi graduated from the eighth grade at the one-room Bethel School at the age of 12. In order to attend high school, she worked for several years for her board and room at a private home in Las Animas, until her family had to give up their ranch and move to town. After graduation she got a job with the Farm Security Administration in Denver. She married George “Dick” White, also from Bent County, on June 12, 1937. The couple lived most of their lives in the Denver area, where Vi worked for several federal agencies, including the Small Business Administration and the National Park Service. She was a highly valued office manager who could handle difficult situations in a graceful but always professional way. She was also an inventive homemaker who enjoyed “fixing up”houses and yards and then moving on to another location. Dick worked as a cattle trader and ran cattle on pastures in Burlington and east of Denver. Vi and Dick had an active social life with their many friends, and Vi enjoyed entertaining, especially by staging elaborate pasture picnics. In fact, her greatest pleasure was spending time in prairie pastures, and she planned to someday have a retirement home on the Dry Land, which she always loved. After Dick’s death in 1991, Vi moved to Ouray County, Colorado, where she designed and oversaw the construction of an adobe home and enjoyed living near her daughter and grandaughter. She died at home on September 30, 2004. She was survived by her sister Irma Arlene Cathcart, of Montrose, Colorado; daughter Gail Slemmer and son-in-law Bill Slemmer, of Ouray County; and granddaughter Eve Donohoe and great-grandson Joe Donohoe, of Montrose County. A sister, Cecile Audrey (1916-1995), and a brother, Lawrence Leon (1923-1975), preceded her in Death
