Vernon was a farmer at Clifton, Illinois following his army service during the Korean War. He began his post office career in 1945 which lasted for 46 years. He was elected to the state board of the Illinois Rural Letter Carriers' Association in 1964, served several offices until his presidency, then was state steward until 1981 when he was elected to the national board. He was the president of the National Rural Letter Carriers; Association when he retired from the postal service in 1991. He continued farming until his election as national secretary necessitated his move to Washington, DC in 1983. At this time he retired from farming and from the Chebanse Township Fire Department which he served as Fire Chief. After retirement from the postal service and moving back to his farm at the northwest corner of Clifton *Section 3, Chebanse Township, Iroquois County), he was elected as mayor of Clifton and as Republican Precinct Committeeman. He also served on board of director of First National Band and on the board of the bank's holding company - these kept him busy up to the day of his death. Norma is a long time genealogist and local historian. Both were members of St. Peter's Catholic Church at Clifton. Vernon is buried at Clifton.
