From the January 10, 1977, edition of the Dubuque (IA) Telegraph Herald Vern McCarthy BERNARD, Iowa -- Vern McCarthy, 69, of Bernard died Sunday at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Services will be at 10:30 am Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at North Garryowen, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 2 pm Tuesday at the Devaney-Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, Iowa, where the Scripture Wake Service will be held at 8 pm Tuesday. Surviving are his wife, the former Rita Donovan; three daughters, Mrs. Edmund (Patricia) O'Connell and Mrs. Richard (Arlene) Henneberry, both of Bernard, and Mrs. James (Janeen) Heim of Dubuque; a son, Jack of Bernard; 20 grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Edmund (Ardella) Leonard and Mrs. Clifford (Lucille) Donovan, both of Bernard. From the January 13, 1977, edition of the Cascade (IA) Pioneer-Advertiser Vern McCarthy services held Vern A. McCarthy, 69, Bernard, Iowa, died Sunday, January 9, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Friends called at the Devaney-Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, from where services were held to St. Patrick's Church at North Garryowen Wednesday, January 12, at 10:30 am. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Rev. Carl Ruhland and Bishop Paul V. Donovan were the celebrants of the funeral Mass. Casketbearers were Ron McCarthy, Pat Donovan, Jim Leonard, John O'Connell, Raymond O'Connell, Tom Henneberry. Vern McCarthy was born May 20, 1907, at Bernard, Iowa, son of Patrick and Catherine (Dunne) McCarthy. He was married November 26, 1935, to Rita Donovan. He was a retired factory worker. He is survived by his wife Rita; one son, Jack McCarthy, Bernard; three daughters, Mrs. Edmund (Patricia) O'Connell, Mrs. Richard (Arlene) Henneberry, Bernard, and Mrs. James (Janeen) Heim, Dubuque; two sisters, Mrs. Edmund (Ardella) Leonard and Mrs. Clifford (Lucille) Donovan, both of Bernard; 20 grandchildren.
