Timothy Stamps was born Jan 19, 1779 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia He married (1st) Leah Wilson, daughter of John Wilson on Dec 19, 1803. Thomas Vaughan was the bondsman and John Wilson signed the certificate. They had five children, but only three survived. Those born 1805 and 1810 died at birthor in their earl y infancy. Timothy married (2nd) Mary "Polly" Carter, nee Stamps, on Dec 30, 1 811 in Halifax County, Virginia.1 She was the widow of William Carter who di ed in 1805 in Pittsylvania Co., Va. He was the son of Theodrick Carter III and Judith Cunningham of Halifax Co., Virginia. Mary was born April 24, 1783 to William Stamps. Her brother, William Stamps, married Elizabeth Carter, si ster of William Carter. Mary had a daughter, Elizabeth M. Carter, born June 20, 1802, who was raised by her stepfather, Timothy Stamps. *** Mary died M ay 7, 1850 in Pittsylvania County. A deed dated 1825, recorded in Chatham, Vir ginia, is signed by Timothy Stamps and his wife, Mary Stamps. The "Diary of Rev. Elias Dodson" states that Timothy Stamps married (3rd) the widow Mary Ho bson sometime after 1860; but she did not survive him. Timothy Stamps lived on a plantation next to that of his brothers, William & Thomas; between Ringg old and Sutherlin, and near to the plantation of their brother, John Jr, over in Caswell Co. North Carolina. Timothy died at the age of 88 years, prior to Oct 21, 1867; as on that date, his last will and testament was proved in Pitt sylvania County. His will was dated on Jan 19, 1860. 1820 Census of Pittsyl vania County, Virginia: He and his wife are 26 to 45; they had 3 sons under 10; 2 daughters, 10 to 14; and 8 slaves. 1830 Census of Pittsylvania County, Virginia: He was 50 to 60; his wife 40 to 50; 1 son 5 to 10; 1 son 10 to 15; 1 son 15 to 20; 16 slaves. 1850 Census of Pittsylvania County, the Southern D istrict, Virginia: Timothy Stamps, 72, born Virginia. ------------------------ 1 Book 1, p. 78 [edit] ===== =========================================================== LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF TIMOTHY STAMPS In the name of God, Amen, I, Timothy Stamps, b eing of sound mind and memory, do make this my last will and testament, hereb y revoking all previous wills. I give to the children of my deceased daughte rs Ann Conway and Jane Wilcox the following property, towit: slaves Lydda an d Eliza, Bennister and Warner, James and Jeny, Ben and a child Liza, meaning to give both slaves by the name of Liza and Eliza in this bequest to the chil dren of my two deceased daughters, and to take this property per stirpes and not per capita, that, said property is to be divided into two equal parts a equal moiety and is to be again divided equally between the two sets of ch ildren. I will and direct that all the rest and residue of my property, of eve ry description, real and personal and mixed, meaning all the rest and residu e of my estate of every description, be divided into three equal parts, and I devise and bequeath one of such parts to my son John H. Stamps. I give and bequeath one other third of the same to my son Timothy H. Stamps, and the rem aining third part to the children of my deceased son Benjamin H.
