John Stamps, Sr. was born ca. 1746 to Thomas and Mary Rose Stamps, in that part of Prince William County, Virginia which became Fauquier County in 1759. He was of the eleventh generation from the first John Stampe, Gentleman, of Cholsey, Berkshire County, England; and of the sixth generation in Virginia. About 1764, at the age of 18 years, he married (1st) Rachel Gooding. They had a daughter, Ann Stamps, born April of 1765. Rachel Stamps did not survive. The Minutes of the Broad Run Baptist Church read: The following infants were received into the care o f the church: October 9, 1763 George Stamps son of Timothy Stamps April 4, 1765 John Stamps son of William Stamps April 4, 1765 Ann Stamps daught er of John Stamps May 9, 1769 Molly Stamps daughter of William Stamps During this period the brothers Timothy, William and John Stamps were members of the church. Ann Stamps did not survive to adulthood. John Stamps, Sr. married (2nd) Eleanor Leannah Dodson on Dec 16, 1765--probably at the Broad Run Baptist Church. She was born ca. 1749 to Elisha Dodson & Sarah Everett (Averitt). Eleanor Stamps, at the time of marriage, was noted as being of Richmond County, Virginia. The Stamps made their home in the Parish of Hamilton in Fauquier County, on lands which he had inherited from his father. Rev. Elias Dodson, their grandson, named her Eleanor Stamps, and in his diary, he wrote that, on April 27, 1791, Elisha Dodson deeded his property to his children, but made no mention of his daughter Eleanor Stamps. John Stamps, Sr. and Leannah Stamps, his wife, are named in a deed dated 1767. In his will, John named his wife, "Leanna Stamps". When their daughter, Lydia Stamps, married Spicer Walters; Eleanor Stamps spelled her name "Leyanner Stamps"; and in her estate, her name is spelled "Leannah Stamps". Throughout their marriage and her widowhood, she called herself, Leannah Stamps. On May 25, 1766, John Stamps, Sr. and his wife, Eleanor Stamps, with his uncle and aunt Thomas & Elizabeth Dodson, leased their Fauquier County lands to Parmach George. The land was bounded by lands owned by Brooks, Taylor and Staurt. And then, in 1767 John Stamps, Sr. and Leannah Stamps sold the land to Parmach George for fifty p ounds current money of Virginia--about $2500.00 . John Stamps, Sr. and his brother, Dr. Timothy Stamps, and their families, settled in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. In 1767 John Stamps and Timothy Stamps were tithables in Pittsy lvania County in John Dix's district. The doctor's sons --Thomas Stamps, Timothy Stamps and John Stamps -- were tithables in Pittsylvania County in 1767 in John Wilson's District. 1 Deed Book 4, pages 293-294 e. Thomas S tamps vii.
