OBIT:http://173.12.11.248/DATA/1875-99/1896/1896-03-28.pdf The Matawan Journal, MATAWAN, N. J., SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 1896, p. 1, col. 5 Thomas T. Tunis died near Imlaystown, in Upper Freehold township, on Thursday, the 10th inst., in the 90th year of his age. Mr. Tunis was of Middltown parentage and Holland extraction, although the family had been in this country long prior to the Revolution. His father was Moses Tunis, afterwards settled at Englishtown, and his mother Christiana Taylor, and a sister of the mother of Thomas and the late Wilson G. Hunt of New York. The deceased was alternately teacher, merchant and farmer, and during the war period and until the office was abolished filled the office of Assossor of Internal Revenue for the 1st Assembly District of this county, making an excellent record as a public officer. He was a man of exceptional intelligence and was highly esteemed, but had of late years lived a very retired life, spending much of his time with the family of his son, Charles H. Tunis, or at the farm of the later in Upper Freehold. He married early in life Susan S. Snowden, of that township, deceased some years since. The immediate cause of death was gripp and pneumonia. The funeral was held on Saturday and the remains are interred in the cemetery attached to the "Yellow Meeting House," near his late residence. OBIT: The Freehold Transciprt http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.livingston/55/mb.ashx Subject: Thomas T. Tunis Author: FulisaShepherd Date: Tuesday, July 04, 2000 Classification: Obituary Surnames: Tunis, Taylor, Hunt, Snowden Thomas T. Tunis dead. Near Imlaystown on Thursday, March 19th, 1896, occurred the death after a brief illness, of Thomas Taylor Tunis, born at Middletown, in this county.February 17, 1807. His father. Moses Tunis married Christianna Taylor of a well known family in Middletown and New York where her brothers, Thomas Taylor for whom the subject of this sketch was named, and Edward Taylor were among the leading merchants of the day. Another sister was the mother of Thomas and Wilson G. Hunt, of New York. The Tunises seem to have come originally from Holland, but had settled in Middletown long before the Revolution at which time the father of Thomas was a lad although old enough to pass through and give account of some thrilling experiences. About the time of the close of the second war with Great Britain Moses Tunis exchanged his farm at Middletown for one near Englishtown to which place he removed and brought with a large family of which Thomas was the youngest boy. On attaining his Majority the latter who had contrived to obtain a pretty fair education for those times, engaged in teaching school. Later on he married Susan R. Snowden of Upper Freehold and removed to New York where he resided for some time, but returning he settled In Upper Freehold, resuming his business of teaching and after a few years opened a country store at which business he continued until 1851,when he bought a property near Imlaystown and settled down to farming. He was at one time assistant Internal revenue collector. His death was primarily due to a severe attack of influenza or grip terminating in pneumonia, and his advanced years told against him. The funeral was held at the Yellow Meeting house, the principle place of worship for the Upper Freehold Bapist church for nearly a hundred years, and his remains lie in the cemetery almost under the shadow of that venerable structure. For many years a member, clerk and trustee of the church and during his life held many minor positions of honor and trust besides those referred to. On the occasion of the death of a sister of Mr. Tunis some years since we refered to the remarkable record of this family for longevity. There were nine children born to Moses and Christianna Tunis. The united ages, with one still living at Brighton, Michigan at the age of 92, foot up 752 years an average of 84 years. Leaving out two who died considerably younger, the other seven have to their credit upwards of 92 years each, while one of them lived to see her 105th and another her 99 year, and still another surviving perhaps to round out the century. Mr. Tunis was a former resident of Brighton and highly respected. Freehold Transcript.(Please note I have no further info.)
