There are a Samuel and a John Stephens listed in the Jackson County, AR Census in 1840. Samuel looks like he could be John's father, and John has a son age 5-9, but they're later listed in the 1850 Jackson County, AR Census, and that son would be Benjamin, age 15. There is a Thomas M. and a William Stephens listed in the Independence County, AR Census in 1840, but neither have a male Thomas' age living in their household. There is an Allan Stephens listed in Izard County, AR in 1840 with a male Thomas' age in the household. Izard is the county bordering Independence on the NW, and Independence borders Jackson on the NW.

Listed in the 1850 Jackson County, Arkansas Census, Village Township, age 129, enumerated November 23, Dwelling 91, Household 91 as Thomas Stevens, age 27, farmer, born KY. With wife "Martha" and a Nancy Scott, age 8. Living near Permelia McManners and other family members.

There is a Thomas Stephens listed in the 1860 Caddo Parish, LA Census, page 40, enumerated July 27, Dwelling 418, Household 423 as Thomas Stephens, age 30, born KY. With wife Caroline, Ben Stephens, age 10, born AR, Bob Stephens, age 8, born AR, Thomas F. (not sure of initial), age 2, born LA, Mathia, age 3/12, born LA. Off to the left side is written "Two sets of children." I'm pretty sure this is our family. Masillia must have died, and Thomas remarried.

Possibly listed in the 1870 Caddo Parish, Louisiana Census, Ward 5, page 35, enumerated July 29, Dwelling 272, Household 272 as T. K. Stevens, age 45, farmer, born KY. With Caroline, age 38, born AL; Wm. E, age 13, born LA; Thos., age 11, born LA; Martha, age 10, born LA. I think this is still the same family. Not sure where William came from...

There was a Yellow Fever epidemic in Caddo Parish in 1873, killing 759 people. Apparently, most of them were buried in a mass grave in Oakland Cemetery. Not sure whether Thomas was a victim or not.

Marriage records have Thomas' middle initial as K. Marriage records to Caroline also have his middle initial as K. So do Permelia's legal paperwork. I am changing it from Marion to a K.

Found in "Inventory of Some Early Probate Papers of Jackson County, Arkansas Taken from the Stream of History pge 13 Vol X July 1972 You should check the County Courthouse in Newport, Ark, for the complete papers and information.": McMANNERS,. Found this on a website talking about some kind of grave-robbing at a Camp Chase in Louisiana: "Grave # 512 Thomas J. Stephens of the 16th La died on November 24th of Pneumonia. 16th LA Inf, Co. B Removed! Note: No soldier by that name in the 16th LA Infantry. May be Thomas J. Stephens, Co. K, 19th LA Infantry. Thomas J. The men were raised in the parishes of Claiborne, Caddo, De Soto, and Vernon." Afterwards, it lists the 1860 Caddo Parish Census record for Thomas Stephens I have listed above. Not sure what this is about.

Thomas K. Stephens bought 40 acres of land from the Batesville Land Office in Arkansas on 11/1/1849. Comments state it is on the right bank of the White River.
