Another sister of Tinker Dave named Mary Elizabeth, or Betsy, married Burton Stephens of nearby Poplar Cove. Not only did he join the company but so did members of his extended family, many of them connecting back to Tinker Dave in subsequent marriages. The roots of the Stephens Clan go back to Thomas Grainger Stephens, who moved with his wife and children from South Carolina to what became Fentress County in the 1810's. One of his sons, Zorababel, was the father of Burton and Andrew Jackson Stephens, both of whom would join Beaty's Independent Scouts. Andrew Jackson Stephens even married one of Tinker Dave's other sisters, Charlotte - thus, a pair of Stephens brothers married a pair of Beaty sisters. A third son, Zoral Babel, sent his son, David Stephens to fight with Tinker Dave as well. Another son of Thomas Grainger Stephens, David Stephens (for whom Babel's son was likely named), had even more ties to Tinker Dave. His son, Monroe Stephens, actually lived on Beaty's farm in 1860. Three other sons of David - Russell, Isaiah, and John Marion Stephens Sr. - all fought with Beaty's Independent Scouts.
