Thomas Simkins’ origins have yet to be established. The age quoted when he died suggests that he was born around 1743. His first confirmed sighting is on Christmas Day in 1777, when he married Elizabeth Hudson at Cranfield in Bedfordshire.

Thomas and Elizabeth went on to have six children baptised between 1778 and 1792 in the neighbouring parish of Marston Moretaine, although two of their sons died as babies and a daughter died when only six years old.

Elizabeth died in March 1830, when she was said to be seventy years old. Thomas survived her by just five months. He was buried on 20th August 1830 at Marston Moretaine. He was said to be 87 years old.
