Russell Cave National Monument was named after Thomas Russell, as follows [from wikipedia.com]:

Russell Cave was named after Colonel Thomas Russell, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War from North Carolina,[19] who owned the property at the time when maps of the area were drawn.[8] The surrounding land, called Doran's Cove, is named after Major James Doran, the brother-in-law of Russell and the original owner of the land.[19] Following excavation and reporting in 1956, the land was purchased by the National Geographic Society and donated to the American people. The area was designated as a National Monument in 1961 during the presidency of John F. Kennedy.

Listed as an early settler and sister of Linnie Russell, wife of Maj James Doran. (Note: Thomas was actually a half-sister of Linnie Russell).

Thomas H. Russell [Parents] was born on Jun 7 1761 in Cumberland Co., PA. He died on Jul 11 1850 in Doran's Cove, Jackson Co., AL. He was buried in Doran's Cove near Bridgeport, AL (across from Russell Cave). He married Tabitha Jenkins on Dec 2 1784 in York Co., Camden Dist., SC.

Thomas was a Private in the Light Dragoons in the Revolutionary War from NC. Moved to moved to Doran's Cove about 1814. He purchased land from his brother in law, James Doran, and settled in the area of Russell Cave (AKA Doran's Cove). This property stayed in the Russell family until 1928 when it was sold to Oscar Ridley. Russell Cave is named for Thomas Russell.
