Thomas Redding was either born in 1808 in Northchurch, Hertfordshire or in 1810 in Chingford, Essex. He may have had an older brother who died early before the family moved. They stayed in Chingford for the births of three children, the oldest of which was Thomas, and then returned to Northchurch. The gravestone gives him a birth which matches the one reported in Northchurch, but states he was born in Essex, a fact which fits with ages given in censuses.

Find a Grave adds the "district municipality" to the address of English burial grounds. These districts have only been in use since 1974 and are not usually employed in postal or street addresses.
- ↑ Alternate birth year of 1808 first suggested because sister Elizabeth's infant baptism occurred in 1810. Confirmed by baptism in Berkhamstead. Note surname spelling.
However, was 1808 birth of an earlier Thomas who died before they went to Chingford? All later censuses for Thomas state born Chingford.
