Death: Nov. 30, 1797

Thomas Pugh was born in between 1699-1705 in Chester County Pennsylvania. Thomas worked as a blacksmith. He was also a Quaker. Thomas is the son of James Pugh and Joan Price-Pugh.
Note: Because the headstone can no longer be read his death date has been documented in a range from (1791 to 1797) thus his birth has been recorded from (1699 to 1705).
Some have recorded his birth date as 10 March 1703 making his death date 1795.
Note: Thomas Pugh's Will was made in 1794, giving said land to his son James Pugh (221 acres.) Records show James Pugh did not take over the land given to him in the Will until 1798, thus indicating Thomas Pugh's death date would have to be 1797.
Thomas married Elizabeth Pugh (maiden name PUGH) circa 1729/30 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Thomas & Elizabeth were first or second cousins through the Pugh side of their family.
* Thomas Pugh was named as a son in James Pugh`s Chester County, PA will.
* In 1724 Thomas inherited from his father James Pugh, 200 acres of rough land between his brother John Pugh and a Simon Meredith on French Creek in Uwchlan, Chester County, PA. (Chester Co., PA DB A, 161)
* In 1731,Thomas and his wife Elizabeth sold the 200 acres to Timothy and Pheobe Savage.
Because Thomas Pugh and Elizabeth were cousins they were was disowned by Uwchlan County Township for "marriage out of union." (This could be why they moved away from Pennsylvania).
* Thomas was paying taxes in Nantmeal and Uwchlan township in Chester County, Pennsylvania, 1730 to 1747.
* He moved from Chester County Pennsylvania about 1747 to Frederick County Virginia then shortly after to North Carolina.
Thomas and Elizabeth Pugh were members of the Hopewell MM (Quaker) in Frederick County Virgina. He then moved to Cane Creek in North Carolina (Quaker). He was received on 3, July 1756.
They were the first PUGH`s to come to NC, about 1750, which is when the North Carolina territory was first opened for settlement, and settled on Sandy Creek in Randolph County.
Thomas owned 200 acres in Randolph County by 1785. The farm was located about 1 1/2 miles northwest of what is now Liberty in Randolph County North Carolina.

According to a reading of the graveyard done in 1979, for Randolph County Cemetery Records, date was 1797
The Randolph County to Genealogical Journal, Vol. 4, No. 5, 12-13, 1934; date was 1791
Thomas Pugh's headstone did read; "Thomas Pugh, who departed this life Nov. 30, 1797, aged 92," was carved on a pink rectangular fieldstone, with a circular crown.
Now the only visible info on the stone is the circle with a dot in the middle. Only a fieldstone foot marker remains for Thomas now in the woods of the Gilmore Plant and Bulb Company nursery fields.
Thomas was buried alongside his wife Elizabeth. The Pughs` daughter Elizabeth Pugh Fruit is buried in the same row, along with her husband, John Fruit. The Pugh's son James Pugh and his wife Jane Patterson Pugh are buried in the next row.
The Pugh/Fruit/Campbell Cemetery (Old Campbell Cemetery) is a small family cemetery located in the area of Liberty, NC.
