Facts and Events
Thomas Price was born 22 April 1750 in what was then Frederick County, Virginia to parents John and Sarah Price. The maiden name of his mother Sarah is unproven. At the time of his birth, the family resided on 440 acres along Hawksbill Creek near Marksville, Virginia. Relatives and associates residing adjacent or nearby were Mungo Price, his uncle; Ann Price wife of Samuel Short, his aunt; Zachariah Price and Edward Price, probable uncles. Associates and neighbors were Solomon Rion/Ryan; John Nicholson and John Gore. Warrants and Surveys of the Northern Neck of Virginia, Virginia State Library. Thomas and his family resided in this area until the French and Indian War. At that time, they retreated east to Culpeper County for safety. Revolutionary War Pension applications of Thomas Price S5954 and Sampson Price S18167. In his pension application, Thomas states he was a resident of Frederick County which became Shenandoah County except for six years, brother Sampson states he was born in Culpeper County in 1761 and moved with his parents to what is now Shenandoah County about 1767. When the family returned to the Marksville area they settled on 290 acres along the Shenandoah River purchased from Lawwrence Garr/Gore. This land was located west of the town of Alma and on the opposite side of the River. In 1777, Thomas Price was enlisted in the Shenandoah militia commanded by Michael Reader. Also recorded on the Muster Roll held by the Historical Society of Virginia were probable brothers Edward Price and John Price and cousins Anjer Price, Even Price, Meredith Price, Jr., Meredith Price, Sr., Zaachery Price, Jr. and Zachary Price, Sr. Thomas Price appears in the Shenandoah County Tax Lists from 1782 until 1787. 25 October 1787 Thomas Price and wife Ruth sell 90 acres part of a greater tract of land formerly granted to Lawrence Goar (sic) and said Lawrence Gore conveyed said land to John Price, Father to said Thomas and the said John Price Sr. by his last will and testament did leave the said ninety acres to Thomas Price his son. Shenandoah County Deeds Book F Page 525. The location of Thomas Price is uncertain until 1798 when he is found in Pulaski County, Kentucky. There are several individuals named Thomas but without additional evidence, it is difficult to know if any are correct. Tax lists, deeds and marriage records of Pulaski County confirm this was where his children were raised. I find no evidence for the maiden name of his wife. I do not believe it to be Ruth Baldwin. Likewise there is no evidence regarding the maiden name of his mother. Original documents prove it is not Brown, Jenkins, Nelson, Randolph or Wilkinson. Please be very careful you have the correct person as several Price men in colonial Virginia share the same name.
