Thomas Preston was baptised on 26th December 1738 at Kirkby la Thorpe in Lincolnshire, son of Bridget Preston, formerly Vincent, and her husband John Preston, a carpenter. When Thomas was fourteen years old his mother died.

It is not clear whether Thomas married. There was a Thomas Preston who married in Kirkby la Thorpe in 1773 which may well be him. However, there was another Thomas Preston who had been baptised at Kirkby la Thorpe in 1747, and the man who married in 1773 could just as easily have been this other Thomas Preston.

Thomas's father died in 1777.

It would appear that Thomas died at the age of 42, being buried at Kirkby la Thorpe on 23rd January 1781. He was described as a grazier.
