Sarah Preston was baptised on 21st August 1737 at Kirkby la Thorpe in Lincolnshire, daughter of Bridget Preston, formerly Vincent, and her husband John Preston, a carpenter. In 1753, when Sarah was fifteen years old, her mother died.

Sarah was married on 7th February 1763 at Kirkby la Thorpe to John Kitching, a cordwainer from the nearby town of Sleaford. They settled in Sleaford after their marriage, having nine children baptised there between 1763 and 1773, although at least six of their children died young.

Sarah died at the age of 38, being buried at Sleaford on 1st December 1775. John survived her by 46 years and went on to remarry in 1777. Sarah's father also survived her.
