Thomas Philips' origins are unknown. His first sighting is on 18th October 1791, when he married Hannah Swallow at Kimpton in Hertfordshire. At the time of their marriage he was described as being from Harpenden. The following year they had a son, Thomas, baptised at Harpenden, although he died as a baby. They went on to have a daughter who also died as a baby in 1798. Thomas has yet to be traced after 1798.
