He was “of Franklin Furnace” according to the wedding notice of his brother Henry (1901).
He was ordained a priest by Bishop Wigger at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Newark, on 27 May 1899.
His eulogy was delivered by Monsignor F. F. Monahan, who said that “After spending his curate days in St. Lucy's parish, Jersey City, and St. Patrick's Cathedral, Newark, due to a physical breakdown so complete that he was not expected to live . . . he has labored under the handicap of a bad heart.”

Rev. Thomas J. J. McEnery of St. Lucy's Church, was presented with a purse of $200 in gold by Belleville friends last week. The presentation was made at the home of the young priest's mother, in Belleville. Father McEnery is now off on his vacation.
