Thomas King was baptised on 18th August 1799 at Leek Wootton in Warwickshire, son of Thomas King and his wife Mary. Thomas’s mother died in 1809, when Thomas was only ten years old. It is not clear when his father died.
Thomas was married on 13th October 1823, aged 24, to Mary Moore. They married at Haseley, about four miles west of Leek Wootton, although Thomas was living in neighbouring Hatton at the time of their marriage.
Shortly after their marriage Thomas and Mary moved into the nearby town of Warwick, where they lived for the rest of their lives. They had six children baptised in Warwick between 1824 and 1839, although two of them died young. All the children’s baptisms give the family’s abode as Saltisford, the main street out of Warwick to the north-west. Thomas worked as a shoemaker.
The 1841 census finds Thomas, Mary and their four surviving children living on Saltisford.
On census night in 1851 Mary was lodging away from home and working as a nurse elsewhere in Warwick whilst Thomas and the children were still living on Saltisford. Later in 1851 Thomas’s eldest daughter married, and Thomas’s first grandchild was born the following year.
By 1861 Thomas and Mary were still living on Saltisford, but only had their youngest daughter still living with them. They also had four boarders and lodgers in the house.
Mary died at Saltisford in Warwick on 20th December 1862 from heart disease. She was 61 years old. Thomas survived her by less than six months. He died aged 63 and was buried in Warwick on 4th June 1863.
