Disputed Lineage

Tingley, in his book Some Ancestral Lines, states that this Thomas Jordan was the son of the Robert Jordan who was buried 12 Oct 1589 in Melcombe Regis[2]. However, while the dates could work, this is not stated in the article Rev. Robert Jordan (NEHGR 13:221-222), which was his likely source (possibly via an intermediary interpretation)[4]. Whitmore (author of Rev. Robert Jordan) only concludes that Rev. Robert Jordan and Joseph Phippen (son of David Phippen) were related. (Neither Whitmore nor Tingley suggest exactly where Rev. Robert Jordan fits into the Dorsetshire Jordan family.)

Whitmore mentions Thomas Jordan as the father of Cicely, wife of Robert Fitspen (Phippen), but he could only be the son of the second Robert if he died before his father, as the issue of Robert Jordaine, merchant, didn't include a Thomas. Thomas could have been the son of Henry, for all we know, or a more distant relative. Whitmore's main point seems to have been that there were Jordan's in Melcombe Regis, Dorsetshire, from whom Rev. Robert Jordan might have descended.

Note that Tingley also appears to make an error in placing Henry Jordan as the son of the younger Robert Jordan, by a second wife[2]. However, Whitmore summarizes his source as follows: 'From two of said enclosures we learn that "Robt. Jordaine Gent. left issue Robert," and that he married "Cokers ------ of ----- ----- in Blandford," for his first wife; "a second wife brought him issue, Henry."'[3] This sentence is difficult to interpret, as the "he" in "he married" could refer to either "Robert Jordaine Gent." or to his son Robert. However, later, Whitmore says that Robert Jordaine, merchant in Melcomb, "left issue, Cokers, Jane and Edward," no mention being made of Henry, so it appears that "he married" refers to Robert Jordaine Gent.
