Did not have Thomas' dob or birthplace, so thanks. Have the following from notes of an aunt (now deceased) - Thomas "signed himself as a bond servant to Israel Putnam (?sp) & came with him to Marietta, OH - when he worked out his alloted time, Putnam (?sp) gave him $100 and a team/yoke of oxen - they came down the river & settled on the farm where we (my aunt's family) lived when ...." my sister was born. I remember the old brick home to which my aunt refers & we have pictures of family with some views of the home in the background. When did Thomas & Chloe marry? Was Chloe's father Capt H.N. Gillette. Would very much like to share info - just let me know what/who you're researching & will make available anything I might have. Would be interested in your info on Chloe & family. So long for now - Nancy

Here's a cute article that you all might enjoy!

THE GOLDEN WEDDING

Numerous relatives and friends of our old and esteemed neighbor,

Thomas Gardner, met on Saturday, the 5th inst., at his delightful farm- residence, to celebrate the Golden wedding of those venerable pioneers of our county.

Among the guests, five, including Mr. and Mrs. Gardner, were

present, who were at his wedding in this (Quaker) Bottom, 50 years ago. When dinner was announced, the table was surrounded with smiling faces all radiant with joy. And such a feast! Gotten up in more artistic style seldom presents itself to the lot of man. It could only be duly appreciated by those who were so fortunate as to participate in the vigorous efforts manifested by every one to appropriate his full share.

We observed several most exquisitely beautiful and ingeniously

constructed specimens of imitation chandeliers, floral designs, etc., etc., the handi-work of Mrs. Francis and Miss Eustacia Gardner.

The exercises of the afternoon were opened with appropriate and

impressive prayer, by Rev. J. M. Kelly, after which brief, but decidedly interesting speeches were made, mostly pertaining to real pioneer life, as seen here from 50 to 60 years ago; many of which were told with a zest that made them hugely enjoyable and caused frequent and spontaneous bursts of laughter from the whole audience.

After numerous congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Gardner from the

audience, H. N. Gillett, stated to the venerable couple, that he could think of nothing he possessed worthy of bestowing upon them, as an expression of his appreciation of the great part they had acted in clearing up our primitive forests, introducing and adopting better and more skillful modes of agriculture, building up churches and schools, erecting splendid and substantial farm buildings, planting fruit and ornamental trees, and in the strictest sense of the word, making the wilderness bloom like the rose, but the best and most sincere wishes of his heart for their future health, peace, happiness and prosperity, through the remainder of their lives. This sentiment appeared to be unanimously adopted and expressed by all present.

After practically discussing the merits of a huge pile of superb

water-melons, and rambling over one of the most beautiful and highly cultivated farms in the State, and having enjoyed one of the most impressive and joyous days of our lives, we returned home with thankful hearts.

Okay, on to child number 2, Thomas. According to Sue Gardner Shreve's research, (quoting verbatim here)

"There was a Thos. Gardner b. 1784 and d. 1862 Athens Co., OH, bur.

in Gardner Cemetary who was m. to a Margaret Smith. However their children were b. in NYC, NY according to two people I have been in contact with." In my many months of digging through Lawrence County data, I feel confident that this is a completely different Thomas Gardner than our forefather Thomas. There is no evidence to support that any of the 1784 Thomas' data can be applied to our Thomas. Thomas and Chloe were married for 51 years before her death. Then Thomas married Barbara Davidson and was married to her before his death. Our Thomas was born 19 June 1794 in Pittsburg, PA. He married Chloe Gillett on 5 Sept 1818 in Rome Twp., Lawrence County, OH. He married Barbara S. Davidson on 24 October 1871. He died 5 December 1879.

From the History of Rome Twp by Thomas Walton The next below was Thomas Gardner who lived on the celebrated Gardner farm. He bought a lot paid $100 and sold coon skins to pay the next hundred. He had a horse, a cow and ten acres cleared. He would make rails and chop in the daytime, would burn brush and grub by its light at night. Ate cornbread and buttermilk and occaisionally had beans, saved all he could, was always at work, both he and his wife, who was a sister of Alanson Gillett. He would carry cockle burs and dock seed in his pocket to the fire and burn them and so got them off his farm. His then wife is dead. He then married a widow Davidson of South point, for his last wife and they now live on a small farm below the mouth of Snake Creek; he having let his son Roswell have his old farm, who now lives on it.

Thomas and Chloe's home was on present day Gardner Lane , he is credited with organizing the first Sunday School in the township in 1833 and it was held in his home until the Beulah Baptist Church was built in 1837. At the time of his death, he left money to both the Beulah Baptist Church and the Pomaria Baptist Church on Greasy Ridge. Beulah Baptist was built in 1837 with main contributors Thomas Gardner, H.N. Gillette. The church had a bell which cracked and a new bell was given to the church from the packet boat "Petrel" which had sank in the river just above the church.
