Thomas Gamble's Will
I Thomas Gamble being of sound and perfect mind and memory to make and this my last will and Testament in manner and form following
First I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Elizabeth Gamble a negroe woman named Peggy and a negro Girl named Jeane and a little negroe Girl Caled [Called] Cealy and a little boy named John and I do also give and bequeath unto my daughter Rebeckah Ford a negroe man named Bill and a negroe Girl named Fileley? and also a negroe girl named Easther.
And I do also give and Bequeath unto my son James Gamble the plantation whereon I now live and also a negroe man named Mathew and a negroe Girl named Mary.
And and [sic] it is my will that my wife have the yuse [sic, s/b "use"] of Mathew and as much of the farm as She may wish to Cultivate during her natural life.
And I do also Will and and [sic] bequeath unto my little Grand daughter Margaret Gamble daughter of James Gamble a negro girl named Allena.
And I also will and bequeath to my wife two Cows that she may select and a Gray horse and one half of my Stock of hogs and all my house hold and Kitchen furnature [sic], and the Ballance of all my personal property not heretofore set apart it is my Will that it be sold and the proceeds with all that is due me when collected and after paying my Doctor fees and all my just debts, if any shall be equally divided Between my wife, my daughter Rebackah Ford and my son James Gamble and my neighbor John Billingsly whom I hereby appoint Executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former will by me made.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and afixed my seal this 6th day of November Eighteen hundred and thirty four.

signed sealed published and declared by the above named Thomas Gamble to be his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our named as witnesses in the presence of the Testator

Then was the foregoing Last Will and Testament of Thomas Gamble deceased produced in open Court and the execution and declaration thereof duly proved by the oaths of David H. Dickey and William Elkins the two subscribing witnesses thereto who depose and say that they were acquainted with Thomas Gamble the Testator therein named and that they saw him sign seal and declare the foregoing to be his last Will and Testament upon the day the same bears date, and that they believed the Testator to be of sound and disposing mind and memory When he executed the same.
Witness my hand at office in Kingston the 5th day of March 1838 and of American Independence the 62nd.

    Thomas Gamble was born in 1765 in Londonderry, North Ireland. He migrated to America on August 10th, 1788. In 1791, he married Elizabeth Patterson, another Irish immigrant and daughter of James Patterson, in Rowan County, North Carolina. In 1808, they moved to Roane County, Tennessee. They had a son, James Gamble and two daughters, Margaret and Rebecca. Thomas was noted for his industry, honesty, blunt independent speech and last but not least, his love of silver money. He died at Pond Creek, Roane County, Tennessee on the 18th day of March 1838.
