Details: Beaver County Times - Apr 5, 1989 Citation Text: Forse fondly recalls Monaca Tom Forse's father brought the family to Monaca from Braddock in 1906, when Tom was a year old. His father, Thomas was chief of security at Colonial Steel Co. Tom, the 3rd oldest, is the only surviving member of 13 children. His father died in 1929 at the age of 72. His mother, Margaret died several years later at the age of 67. Tom met his future wife, Margaret Jurison of Monaca, while she was walking with another girl up the 14th street hill in Monaca. After several months of dating, the couple eloped to Moundsville,W. VA. From this union are six children: Cecilia, who lives with her father in Monaca; Shirley Schlosser of Boston; Mrs. Don (Charlotte) Zgoda of New Brighton; David of Ambridge; William of New Brighton; David of Ambridge; William of New Brighton; Penny of Williamsport. There are 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Tom's wife died in 1980. Like his father, Tom worked at Colonial Steel. In 1947, he was employed by St. Joseph Lead Co. in Potter Township and retired 10 years later because of injuries received in an industrial accident. Cecelia, who takes care of her father, trained as a practical nurse at Beaver Valley Geriatric Center at the Ambridge School of Nursing. Tom's memories of Monaca are vivid. He recalls the Ku Klux Klan burning crosses in an open field that overlooked Phoenix Glass Co. in Monaca. The crosses were directed against the Catholics and the blacks," Tom said. "But everyone was made aware that the entire procedure was un-American." Tom was an expert at hanging wallpaper. He would do it for his relatives, and exchanged wallpaper hanging for a haircut from one uncle. Another uncle was a butcher and an aunt was a midwife, so the family had its own built-in cooperative. The Forse family lived along Elkhorn Run, which went through Monaca and Center. Near Woodlawn (later a part of Aliquippa), the Forses had an ice house near Domitrovich Meat Processors. Tom, despite the protests of his wife, often would be a sparring partner for Teddy and Tommy Yarosz and other boxers in the area. Teddy was a former middleweight champion and Tommy fought some of the best in the field before and after WWII. Musically inclined, Tom was the caller for round and square dancing at Craig Farm in the Center-Monaca area. He also was an excellent dancer and remembered polkas as played by Stan Trella on the fiddle, and Tom (Tink) Bailey on the guitar. Roller skating was also popular in Monaca. At one time, much money was bet on rooster fights held illegally in the community. "Monaca was a booming town and there were five glass factories, including Phoenix and Dietrich's," he said. "Things have changed but Monaca hasn't given up and is holding its own.'
