Today, a great coach and a better man has passed away. Tom Henson was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Grand Valley High School, went away to college, and came back home to teach and coach and mentor quite a few generations of young people in his long and illustrious career.

Older Cardinal Huskies will remember that before Tom and older brother Jim became the face of Grand Valley Athletics, each of them spent a stint early in their career teaching and coaching at Cardinal back in the 1970s. After cutting their teaching and coaching teeth in Middlefield, each was able get back home to Grand Valley where they personified the football program (Jim) and basketball program (Tom) for many years--although Tom was always Jim's defensive coordinator through the years. After Jim retired from GV and moved on to teach and coach at Edinboro University, Tom hung up his basketball whistle and became head football coach in the early 2000s, in addition to being the Mustangs' athletic director. The man did it all, and you couldn't go to any athletic event at GV and not run in to Tom and Carla.

It was a privilege to play with Tom 'back in the day' and a privilege to coach against him later in the day. A true competitor, a mentor of young people for many years, and a devoted husband and dad--a good man. Hearts and prayers go out to the Henson family.
