Thomas Jefferson East [E1b12a], son of Barzley Graves East and Nancy Jones, was born 4 December 1833 in Giles Co TN and grew up in McNairy Co. He was a farmer and married Nancy Louisa Tulley. Lou was born in (Henderson Co?) TN in January 1846, daughter of Felix P Tulley and his first wife (of three); in 1880 she and Jeff were living near Arkabutla, DeSoto Co MS (near Coldwater; see the biography of his brother John Edwin East), where they had been for about ten years. Jeff's brother Henry was living with him in 1880. Jeff died on 13 February 1897. Lou then moved to Hunt Co TX where she married Calvin Acie Atherton on 27 August 1899. He was born at Milburn, Ballard Co KY in August 1849, son of Charles M Atherton and Nancy Jayne Rudd. Why Lou chose to live in Hunt Co is not known; perhaps it was because her eldest son Bob had already established himself there. Lou lived next door or lived with her son Joe in 1920 and in 1930. Her second husband Calvin Atherton died in 1931, probably in Hunt Co. He was living with his daughter Mildred K Atherton (Mrs William A Bench) in 1930 in Hunt Co. Jeff and Lou had five children by 1880, but nine in all by 1897-

Felix P Tully lived in Henderson Co in 1850, in Carroll Co in 1860; and in DeSoto Co MS in 1870 and 1880. Nancy Lou Tulley’s full brother Lemuel Britton Tulley, lived much of his married life in Dyer Co TN.
Felix P Tulley was married at least three times. The first wife, and Nancy Louisa Tulley’s mother is unknown, but they lived in either Carroll Co or in McNairy Co; wife #2 was Didema, born in TN in 1833; wife #3 was Susan, born in AL in 1842. Feliz was born in AL in 1827. He married his first wife and lived in TN; their first set of children were Lemuel B Tulley, born in 1845, and Nancy Louisa, born in 1848. When his first wife died, he left his two children with his parents William B and Sarah Tulley in McNairy Co TN to be cared for. Felix soon after married Didema Jane, wife #2 and they lived in Carroll Co TN in 1860, now with Lemuel B and Nancy, plus the second set of children who were Sarah T, born 1849, Mary L, born 1851, and Albert H, born in 1857. In 1870 Felix Tulley and his family lived in DeSoto Co MS. His wife was not shown in the census (there was just a blank line in her place), and the children in his home were Lemuel B, Sarah T, Mary L, all three born in TN, then Albert H was born in MO, then Columbus, John, Felix, all born in TN, then the youngest was Robert Tulley, born in MS in 1868. In 1880 Felix Tully (senior) was still in Desoto Co, now married to Susan. The children in their home were Felix, now age 12, Robert Lee, age 11, William, age 7, Powell, age 3, nephew R E, age 16, and niece Minnie, age 17. All young people from Felix (Jr) to Minnie were born in TN. So this Tulley family and the Tom Jefferson East family seemed to stay together over the years.
Some children of Calvin Atherton, from his marriage to Sarah Francis Morgan before marrying Mrs Lou East, were: Mary A, born 1870 in Ballard Co KY; Mildred K “Cattie”, born in January 1874 in Ballard Co KY; Charles, born May 1878 in Ballard Co KY; Eunice, born 22 July 1887, died 5 September 1972; Emma Ethel, born 9 October 1891 in TX, died 27 July 1909, and was buried with her mother in East Mount Cemetery at Greenville; and Lloyd Atherton, born in October 1997 in TX.. Eunice Atherton married Joseph Lemuel East [E1b12a7], shown above as a son of Thomas J East and Lou Tulley.
