THOMAS DUCKETT, SENIOR lived in Maryland. He later moved to South Carolina. After his father's death, Thomas married and began rearing a family, and when a few years later, his mother and probably most of his siblings departed for South Carolina, Thomas remained behind. However, inNovember 1773, he sold his parental land in Frederick County, Maryland, and, with his young family, left for South Carolina to join his mother and other kin. On March 14, 1773, he sold his parental land in Frederick County, Maryland (only four months later), he purchased his first land in the latter Province. This acreage was located in what is now Laurens County, but by March 1806, he was living in Newberry County. October 24, 1744 Thomas Duckett was born on this date, as per an old family record. April 24, 1764 His father made Thomas Co-Executor of his will which was written this date (although Thomas was not 20 years of age), together with Thomas' mother. October 31, 1765 Thomas Duckett, as Executor of his father's will, joined with his mother (the Executrix), in disposing of a 35 acre tract of land called "Grubby Hollow," in Frederick County, Maryland, to Valentine Thomas. 1766 About this time Thomas married Mary O'Dell. November 20, 1773 Thomas Duckett disposed of a 28 acre tract of land in Frederick County, Maryland, which had belonged to his late father, called "the Mountain," to Phillip Henry Thomas, for ten pounds shillings. /s/ Thomas Duckett. [Frederick County LandRecords, Liber U, pages 348- 350] November 20, 1773 Thomas Duckett disposed of 321 ½ acres of land in Frederick County, Maryland which had belonged to his late father, called "The Flagg Pond," to Thomas Johnson of said County, "planter," for 200 pounds currency. This land bordered (in part) upon a tract of land called "lashmutts Folly" - and a tract called "Perry's Lott." /s/ Thomas Duckett. Witt: Thos. Price, Jos. Wood. "Then came before us the subscribers two of his Lordships Justices of Fred. County, Thomas Duckett and acknowledged the within Deed according to an act of assembly in Such cases made and provided at the same time Mary the Wife of the said Thomas Duckett Came of her own free Will and Accord Acknowledged her Right of Dower to the within mentioned Land and Premises. Acknowledged before Jos. Wood, Thos. Price." [Frederick County Land Records, Liber U, pages 312 - 315] March 14, 1774 "THIS INDENTURE . . . BETWEEN Samuel Bishop of Berkly County . . . & Thos. Duckett of the Same County & Province of So. Carolina . . . witnesseth that for & in Consideration of the Sum of five Shillings Curent money of the sd. Province, to him in hand . . . paid by the sd. Thos. Ducket . . . Doth Bargain & Sell unto the sd. Thomas Ducket his heirs Exectr. Adm. And Assigns a certain Plantation or Tract of land Containing one hundred acres, Situate Lying and being in the fork Between Broad & Saludy rivers on the South Side of Enoree River, Bounded N.E. onsd. River N.Nw by lands laid out to Thomas Flewelling & S.W. by landslaid out to Andrew Owins & Part Vacant, & S. Eward by lands part laid out to Wm. Ragans & Part vacant . . . Together with all & Singular the Gardens Orchards, fences, ways, wells, waters, water courses, Easements, profits, Commodities, Advantages, Emoluments, Hereditiments & appurtenances whatsoever . . ." /s/ Samuel Bishop. Between Major Thomas Gordon and Elizabeth his wife, and Thomas Duckett . . . (all of) 96 District & State of South Carolina . . . for 200 lbs. . . . part of 300 acres granted to Wm. [Laurens County, South Carolina Deed Book B, Pages 46] 1776 - 1782 Thomas Duckett's name appears in Newberry County, South Carolina, Historical and Genealogical, by George Leland Summer, Senior. (1950), Page 9, among the Privates (some of whom may also have served as officers") who served from the Newberry County, South Carolina area, inthe Revolutionary War. No other record of his service has come to light. January 6, 1786 (Lease and release) 184 1/16 acres ("part of a tract of 300 acres conveyed to Thomas Gordon on February 22, 1775", for 5 shillings . . . situated on both sides of Enoree River (formerly called Creek) . . ." /s/ Thomas Gordon. /s/ Elizabeth Gordon. [Laurens County, South Carolina Deed Book B, Page 44] May 13, 1787 "SOUTH CAROLINA - I have caused to be admeasured and laid out unto Thomas Duckett a Tract of Land containing One Hundred and Thirty Acres Situate in the District of Ninety Six on a small Branch of Enoree River and hath such Form, Marks, Buttings and Boundings as the above Plat Represents. CERTIFIED for the 13 May 1787, Ephraim Mitchell, S.G., Robert Hanna, Dep. Survr." [Post Rev. Know all men by these Presents that I Thomas Duckett of Newberry District and State aforesaid In consideration of Seventy five Pounds Sterling money to me Paid by Charles Sims of Laurens District and State aforesaid have granted Bargained Sold and Released . . . unto the said Charles Sims, a Plantation or Parcle of Land Situate in Laurens District on the Branches of Enoree River Consisting of Part of Two Tracts one of which was Originally Granted to Samuel Bishop Senr. and the other to the said Thomas Duckett Being in ye whole Two hundred and forty Seven acres moreor less Bounded by Lands Belonging to the widow Wesson Thos. Know all men by these presents that I Thomas Duckett of Newberry District and State aforesaid in consideration of Seventy five Pounds Sterling money to me paid by Dred Jones of the state and District aforesaid, have granted Bargained sold and released . . . unto the said Dred Jones Two hundred and forty seven acres of Land situate upon the South Side of Enoree River consisting of Part of three tracts Beginning at a red oak on the River Bank called Isaac Ewards old corner . . . Being Two Hundred and forty Seven acres be the same more or less. Bounded Eastwardly by the widow Wesson's Land Towardly by part of said tract Belonging to Charles Sims & Northwardly by the Said Enoree River . . ." /s/ Thos. Duckett. [Laurens County Deed Book L, Pages 14 - 15] 1809 and 1810 Thomas Duckett bought of John Johnston a total of 200 acres in two deeds, land on Indian Creek, in Newberry County. This place was called "Pennington's Fort", and probably had been owned originally by Jacob Pennington,. An early settler in this area. In the Annals of Newberry (1851), Page 51, John Belton O'Neall remarked that this place passed on to Thomas's son Jacob, and from Jacob to the latter's son, Col. James William Duckett, and "through all that time . . . [was] remarkable for the care and thrift with which it [had] been managed." [Newberry County, South Carolina Deed Book J, Pages 47 and 586] Thomas Duckett made his last will and testament, and which was proved October 4, 1824. [Newberry County, South Carolina Record of Wills, Probate Court, Book I, Pages 242 - 243] October 4, 1824 Letters Testamentary, on Estate of Thomas Duckett, dec'd, issued to Jacob Duckett and Baruch Odell. Warrant of Appraisement to William Whitmire, Bordy W. Roberts, J. D. Casey. [Laurens County Deed Book L, Page 23] December 28, 1824 Order of Sale and Sale Bill, shows Thomas Duckett, Baruch Odell, William Duckett, John Odell, Andrew Gibson, Jacob and Joseph Duckett and John Odell, as principal buyers. [Laurens County Deed Book L, Page 23] November 22, 1825 Final Return, lists the following Legates: Susanna Gibson, specific legacy, $150; James Duckett's children's legacy, $60; Thomas Duckett's children's legacy, $20; Jacob Duckett's distributive share, $629.73; John Duckett, $629.73; Baruch Duckett, $629.73; Joseph Duckett, $629.73; (Nathan) Sarah Fowler, $629.73; (Daniel) Polly Reader, $629.73; (Edward) Betty Jeans, $629.73; (Baruch) Rachel Odell, $629.73; Patsy Fowler, $629.73. There is a paper in this file headed "Henry County, Georgia, by Andrew Gibson and Susannah Gibson, the wife of thesaid Andrew, later the widow of Thomas Young, deceased of South Carolina and whose name before her intermarriage with the said Young was Susannah Duckett, daughter of Thomas Duckett, deceased," asking that JesseJohnston be her attorney to receive her legacy.
