In the name of God Amen, I Thomas Dowse of Brooke in the Parish of Kingsombome in the county of South[amp)ton, Gent., being in perfect health and memory (blessed be God for the same) yet sensible of the certainty of death and uncertainty of the time thereof doe make this my last Will and Testament thereby to dispose of that estate wherewith it hath pleased God to blesse me soe as I may therewith leave the Legacie of peace behind me. In the first place I doe comit and humbly resign my soule into the hands of God that gave it in confidence of the eternall salvacon thereof through the infinite mercy of my good God and the alone merits of my blessed Redeemer And for my body my desire is that it may be decently interred in the Parish Church of Kingsomborne in or near the place Where my Grandfather was buryed and that without any unnecessary expenses I intending mourning for my Children and a decent and sober entertainment to such of my Friends and Neighbours as shall please to accompany me to my grave, desiring that a serious sermon of mortality may be made to the living there present without any commendacon of the dead in whon1 there is not anything praiseworthy. As for all my Lands, Tenen1ents and Hereditaments not setled upon the marryage of my Sonne, I doe thereof thus dispose that is to say all my Lands in Billesby, Mannby, Chappell, Hoggesthorpe and else\¥here in the County of Lincoln, I doe give and bequeath the same to my only sonne Thomas Do\¥Se and his Heires forever advising him to sell the same soe soon as he can though at a low price it lying at soe great a distance from his Habitacon and other estates. As for my Houses in the Butcher row without Temples barre in the parish of St. Clements Danes in the County of Middlesex whereof I am now seized of an estate in fee simple by the release of the surviving Trustee in Whose name I purchased the revercon thereof and all my Lands in Ibdroge in the parish of Uphursbome lately purchased of Edward Roe, Clerke. And that Messuage or Tenement in Brooke with the Lands and Appurten[an]ces thereunto belonging lately purchased of John Rothwell I doe give and bequeath the same to my said sonne Thomas for his life without impeachlnent of waste and after his death to my Grandchild Thomas Dowse and the Heir es of his body and for want of such He ires to my own right Heires forever. And as for Nether Eldon Farm and the Tythes there with to me devised by the right Hono[ra]ble Henry Lord Sandys for the terme of fourscore year.es (if three yeares now all in being) should soe long live I doe give and bequeath the same to my said Grandson Thomas Dowse and his Assigns for and during all the rest and residue of that time and terme I have yett therein to come and unexpired upon this condicon nevertheless that my said sonne Thomas Dowse shall receive the rents, issues, and profitts thereof untill my said Grandchild shall attaine the age of five and tvventy yeares [and] keep and maintaine my said Grandsonne at some good s[c)hoole or place of sober educacon until his age of sixteen yeares at the least. and out of the Overplus of the said Rents, issues and profits to renew such farther estate or estates in the said Farme and tythes as shall be necessary upon the death of any of the persons for whose lives the same are now holden and allow my said Grandsonne after his coming from schoole such annuall sum[m]e or sum[m]es of money for his Maintenance as the supervisors of this my will herein after named shall think fitt until he shall attairie his said age of five and twenty yeares. As for my personall estate I doe thereof thus dispose First I doe give to my sonne and daughter Allen Tenne pounds apeece to buy mourning for themselves and Children and farther to my said sonne Allen I doe give my best riding Gelding and saddle; And to my daughter Allen tenne peeces of old broad Gold and tenne Ginnyes Which lye ready in my deske for her; And to my three Grandchildren Thomas Elizabeth and Frances Allen I doe give and bequeath One hundred pounds apeice at their respective ages of one and twenty yeares. To my daughter Dowse I give and bequeath all the plate I shall dye possessed of excepting only what was formerly given to my sonne her Husband by his deceased Mother Which I leave to his disposall and I doe omit giving of any Legacies to her daughters by my said Sonne because I intend to leave my said sonne my sole Executor and their porcons to his disposal. I doe also give and bequeath to my Brother Anthony Dowse, my Sister Rayner, My Sister Flower and Sister Searle five pounds apeice to be paid unto them respectively within six Monthes after my decease. To my much Honoured Friend Sir John Archer I doe give a mourning Ring of forty shillings price as a small testimony of my gratitude for the many great favous I have received at his hands the same to be presented to him within one Month after my death. To my worthy and oblidging kinsman Mr Robert Marsh, to my good sister Mrs Mary Phillipps, my sister Mrs Jane Percivall, my sister Bridget Phillips, my sister Susan Clowdesley and dear Cozen Mrs Bridget Richier I give mourning rings to the value of twenty shillings apeice to be delivered to each of them within six Months after my decease. And to all my servants dwelling with me at the time of my death I give tenne shillings apeice to be presently paid them . To the Poore of the Tything of Brooke I doe give forty shillings to be distributed amongst them at the disc retion of my Executor hereinaftemamed. And to the Poore of Kingsombourne I doe give four pounds to be divided amongst them the next day after my funerall by my honest Neighbors Mr Barnabus Barlow, Henry Thornton and John Moody desiring that in the distribucon thereof the cheife regard be had to the aged and working poore, But my will is that as many of the said Poore of Kingsomboume as shall on the day of my funeral come to my House there to be troublesome shall loose their shares of this my Legacie. And as for all the rest of my goods, chattels and personall estate whatsoever herein or hereby not before disposed I doe give and bequeath the same to my said sonne Thomas Dowse whom I doe hereby nominate constitute and appoint the sole Executor of this my last will and testament of which I doe make my worthy friend and brother Mr Thomas Edmonds and my good Brother Mr Edward Raynor supervisors to whose judgment and deterrninacon I doe hereby referre all differences that may happen to arise in anything relateing to this my will and to each of them I give a ring of twenty shillings price. In witnesse Whereofl have hereunto sett my hand and seale the six and twentyeth day of February in the yeare of our Lord God one thousand six hundred and eighty Revokeing all other Wills by me formerly made and referring to my booke of accompts for the perticulars of all 1ny estate both reall and personall.

He died on 4 January 1682/3 in his 65th year and was buried at Kings Somborne on 11 January 1682/3. His first wife was probably __ PHILLIPS apparently were daughter of Edward Phillips, joiner, and his wife Susan who had children baptized at St. Martin Ludgate, London, 1627- 1638. Thomas Dowse married second at St. Dunstan's, Stepney, Middlesex, on 19 August 1652, SUSANNA MONDAYE. The marriage record describes him as from St. Gregory's, London, cloth drawer, and she from Foster Laine, Middlesex. By early 1665 he was living on Watling Street, London, when he was named in his father's will. This place of residence effectively identifies him as the Thomas Dowse who had children recorded at St. Augustine Watling Street, London, 1653- 1659.
