Bio: Theodore Shaman Sr.SHAMAN, Theodore R., Sr. A life-long resident of Dayton, passed away Monday May 16, 2005 at Hospice of Dayton after an incredibly hard-fought battle for life. He gave new meaning to the word "courage." Ted was born in Dayton, Ohio on June 29, 1916 to Benjamin R. and Fannie (Goldzwig) Shaman. He began college and then moved to Texas briefly before joining the army by memorizing the eye charts, as he was legally blind in his right eye. He was one of the first land troop contingents to enter Germany in World War II and was nearly killed by a "buzz bomb." He was awarded the Bronze Star for deciphering a secret German code. He also met General George Patton while in Europe. He was truly a "man's man." Ted returned to Dayton after the war and married Joanne Silverman, daughter of Dr. Henry R. and Bertha H. (Frank) Silverman. He graduated from the University of Dayton in Finance. He worked in a variety of fields including work at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, sold real estate, owned Shaman Florist (later sold to Ed Smith), was an Auditor for the State of Ohio and was a stockbroker for many years. He loved sports, particularly Cincinnati Reds baseball, Ohio State football and golf. He once shot a 73 on a Scottish golf course. He loved to eat and read, do cross word puzzles and word jumbles. He was a brilliant thinker with a photographic memory. His mind was unbelievable. Ted was very much a family man who was loved and well respected by family and friends. They would continually call upon him to answer their every question on any imaginable subject. And he always knew the correct answer! Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Fannie Shaman, stepmother Sally (Serbin) Shaman, stepbrother, Richard (Marilyn) Serbin. He is survived by his devoted, loving wife of almost 59 years, Joanne, devoted sons Tim Shaman and Todd (Kathy) Shaman, grandsons Seth, Nathan and Josh Shaman, great-grandson Noah (son of Seth), brothers Richard (Shirley) Shaman, William Shaman, sister Dorothy (Shaman) Finder, step brother William Serbin, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Ted was also a life-long member of Temple Israel. The world has lost a unique mental giant. We will miss Ted tremendously, our husband, our father, our friend. There will be a graveside service at Riverview Cemetery, 1809 W. Schantz Ave., on Friday May 20, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. with Rabbi David Sofian officiating.
