Richard G. Shaman Sr.
SHAMAN Sr., Richard G. Age 96 of Dayton, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2011. He was born in 1915 to Ben Shaman and Fan Goldswig Shaman. Dick attended Steele High School and graduated with honors at age 21 from Ohio State University. While there, he managed the Varsity football team and was president of the S.A.M. Fraternity. In 1936, Dick joined the family business, First Insurance, which was founded in 1906. He became president of the business in 1961 and retired after more than 62 years of service. He was awarded "Man of the Year" by Travelers Insurance in 1955 and received a merit award from Dayton Insurance Agencies Association in 1956. Always dapper and gentlemanly, he served in a host of leadership roles in every facet of his life. Richard was a community leader and served as president of Temple Israel. He was a veteran of WWII. Richard was the eldest of four children, and is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, brother Ted, step-brother Dr. Richard Serbin, sister-in-law Joanne and brother- in-law Jerry Finder. He is survived by 3 children: Beth Kornberg, Richard Shaman, Jr. and Jane Shaman; 5 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sister Dorothy Finder; brother Bill Shaman; step-brother Bill Serbin; brother-in-law Dr. Jim Silverman; sister-in-law Adair Silverman and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Wednesday 10:30 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery, 1809 W. Schantz Avenue, Rabbi David Sofian officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Israel or the .
