(1) Moved from the vicinity of Norfolk, VA to King and Queen Co., where he acquired title t o a large tract of land and conducted planting operations. (7) Succeeded his father at "Canterbury" and lived there during his lifetime. (7) 1782: Charged with 600 acres which ran from the Mattapony River across the road leadin g to St. Stephen's Church. (In another place in the same source, it says his father Owen wa s charged.) (9a) 1794: Benjamin TEMPLE, Jos. Tuck, Robert HILL Jr., J.H. BURNS, Temple GWATHMEY and Rob ert POLLARD witnessed a lease of Wm. HICKMAN and Wm. HARRIS to Thomas WALKER, land in King Wi lliam Co., VA leased in 1722 by Edmund JENNINGS and Thomas CORBIN from Col. John HICKMAN fo r 500 years, inherited by Wm. WARDE & conveyed by his estate to Wm. HICKMAN & Wm. HARRIS. (7) Refused to allow a daughter who had married a Baptist minister to be buried in the fami ly graveyard. In time the GWATHMEYs, like the rest of their neighbors, became members of th e Baptist churches wherever they lived. (7) His sons left "Canterbury" to Robert Temple Gwathmey. |
