John HILL, late of King William, gent. , deceased, father of the said Robert. Frances WALKER late wife of Thomas WALKER, deceased. (4) Executors of his estate were Richard GWATHMEY (1789-1866), John Hill GWATHMEY (1798-183 9) and William GWATHMEY (1794-1875). (6) "Burlington" was passed to his son, John Hill GWATHMEY, who lived there until his death . (3) When "Burlington" was burglarized in Sep 1982, it was the first time since the house wa s built that no one was living in it. The owner, John R. GWATHMEY, had died 30 Aug 1982, an d the burglary occured the night of his funeral. The house was on 800 acres at Aylett, King W illiam Co., VA. John R. GWATHMEY had kept what had been in the house for scores of years. H e inherited "Burlington" from his father, to whom it had been handed down as part of a 3,00 0 acre British royal land grant, "Burwell". John lived there with his two unmarried sisters u ntil they died, then he lived there alone. (4) John Ryland GWATHMEY (1888-1982) was s/o Josep h Hardin GWATHMEY/Jeannette Garnett RYLAND, s/o William GWATHMEY/Elizabeth Theresa BURNLEY, s /o Maj. Joseph GWATHMEY. His sisters were Anna Garnett GWATHMEY (1879-1979) and Mary Burnle y GWATHMEY (1883-1974). "Burlington" was placed on the VA Landmarks Register in the late 1970 's. In 1977, the Burlington-Gwathmey Memorial Foundation was established to maintain the fami ly estate after the death of John Ryland GWATHMEY. (5) 1997: The state of VA had let "Burlington" go without upkeep. Dr. Owen GWATHMEY's son J ohn Owen GWATHMEY bought back "Burlington" and restored it. He also bought the 600 acre estat e on which the house stood. References
