About Tandy Holman

I have seen information on Genforum that he was born in 1695 in Tidewater, Virginia.

Found on Genforum: Descendant of Frank C. Holman. I have that Tandy Holman, married to Mary Wagstaff had five children. Mary, b 1720, married Charles Rice. Elizabeth b 1721 married Mennis?(last name) Tandy Jr, born in 1723 but there is no record of his marrying or having descendants. He died in 1765. William born in 1725 and marrried Susan Thompson. And John born in 1731. I have no record of William's decendants. John Holman has a grandson by James Yancey. His name is Col. James Tandy and he was born in 1802. I do not have the record of where he was born.Iam trying to go back further and get the parents of Tandy born in 1695.

Found on Genforum: He was born about 1695. Married Mary Wasgstaff and died in 1734 in Carolin County Va. I do not have his mothers name but suspicion it to be Rebecca Tandy. Tandy's father was Henry Holman, which I just found out from the LDS web site. Tandy Sr. Aslo had a son Tandy born in 1723.

Found on Genforum: Tandy Holman as son of William Holman and Ann Tandy, but do not have any good documentation. would be glad to share info.

Found on Genforum: No first name, but Tandy researchers have long considered that a daughter (born ca 1662) of Henry and Rebecca Tandy was the one who married a Holman and produced the first Tandy Holman. Henry was born before 1640 and died in Rapahannock County, Virginia, before Feb 1691.

Found at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/RICE-SOUTHERN/2002-11/1038453189 It is from "The Holmans of Virginia" by Harry Stuart Holman, M. A., published privately, 198? "Tandy Holman was born in Tidewater, Virginia about 1695. He married about 1719 in York County, Virginia, to Mary Wagstaff, daughter of the late Basil Wagstaff, Jr. (d. 1719) of York County. Mary was one of nine children--each of whom had just received valuable property, including a gold mouning ring, from their deceased father. Tandy appears in the York records in 1726 as a county resident making application to serve as a guardian of Mildred Wagstaff, Mary's sister. In making this request, Tandy was required to post a bond, showing he was a man of property. He also signed the application, showing he was to some degree educated. Shortly after this time, the Tandy Holman family, which included a few children at this time, moved to Caroline County in the heart of the Old Dominion. It was there in 1731 that John Holman, their youngest child, was born. The family was affiliated with the Anglican Church in the St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County. It was there that their youngest child was baptized in the summer of 1731. About three years later, Tandy Holman of Caroline County died. Only the will index remains. It shows that the estate was settled in 1734 and was settled by Col. Anthony Thornton, evidently a friend of the Holmans. Many years later, Tandy Holman, Jr.'s will makes reference to this will of Tandy Holman, showing that he had ordered if any of his sons should die without issue, the surviving brothers should have his part. Without the actual will or deeds, one can only guess what property was left to Tandy's young widow and the five small children.

Children:
1. Mary, b. 1720 in York County m. Charles Rice.
2. Elizabeth, b. about 1721 in York County and m. Collohill Mennis.
3. Tandy, Jr. b. about 17223 in York County, never married.
4. William, b. about 1725 in York County and m. Susannah Thompson.
5. John, B. July 13, 1731, Caroline County, Va., and m. Susannah Yancey.

FIRST GENERATION

1. Mary Holman was born about 1720 in York County, Virginia, daughter of Tandy and Mary Wagstaff Holman. She grew to maturity at her father's home in Caroline County. By about 1740, she married Charles Rice, and they resided for some time in Louisa County. On February 15, 1750, Charles Rice bought a farm in Western Goochland County. This place adjoined Dr. Hopkins' land. Charles and Mary Holman Rice remained on this place for the rest of their lives. Mary's brothers, Tandy and William, also settled in this part of Virginia. In time, Charles Rice became an elder in the local Presbyterian Church, serving along with John Lewis, John Payne, and Archelus Jarrett. At one time, Rice and Stephen Sampson went on a bond for Joseph Maddox and Mary Clarkson for the sum of 1,000+. This shows that Charles Rice was a man of means. During the American Revolution, Charles Rice supported the cause of liberty by contributing 265 pounds of beef for the feeding of the soldiers (Charles Rice was too old to serve in active duty at this time).* He died in either 1786 or 1787, leaving his wife an thirteen children.

Children : (a partial list)
1. Tandy, m. Sarah Sampson in 1761 and lived in Fluvanna Co.
2. William, had a wife named Sarah and lived in Pittsylvania Co.
3. Capt. Holman, married Jane, served as a captain in the Revolutiony War, resided in Louisa County after the Revolution. (Went on the Bath County, KY)
4. Capt. Basil, served in a Virginia Regiment of the Continental Army as a captain, and resided in Goochland County, Virginia after the War.
5. Molly, m. William Trice in 1764, and lived in Amherst County, Virginia.
6. Charles, Jr., died in Kentucky.
7. Franky, b. Goochland Co., Virginia in 1756."

Have seen it listed that Tandy's father was Abraham Holman from the Isle of Kent.
