amar was a daughter of William Bell and Anna Beard. She was born in Augusta County, Virginia. She moved with her family as a young child, to Knox County Tennessee around 1806-1808. Her father died not long after, in 1813 when Tamar was about 11 years old.

Tamar was married to James Chetwin Barnett on Jan. 21, 1819 in Blount County, Tennessee.
This marriage produced 8 children. The first five born in Tennessee, and the final three in what was to become Murray County, Georgia. They seems to have come with the 1832 Land Lottery of Georgia which spurred the final dissolution of remaining Cherokee Lands in North Western Georgia. James was the newly appointed Sheriff of Murray County in 1833 but died in 1835 not long into his career. Tamar was left a widow, living in a household with her elderly mother Anna and eight children under the age of 13.

Tamar was married a second time, on Feb. 2, 1841 to Dr. Elias H. Berry. They married in Murray County, Georgia. They had one daughter together, Josephine Tamar Berry, she was born before here parents were married. Elias died in the fall of 1858, leaving Tamar a widow for the second time.
