EFIA states Sylvia was a Red Cross nurse in Nitro, WV during the war and then enlisted with the Near East Relief (now called American Committee for Relief in the Near East) for duty in the Levant where she was assigned to a hospital in Aintab, Cilicia. She was transferred to an orphanage in Beirut during fighting and then returned to Aintab until 1921. She was decorated by the French for her coolness and courage in removing 40 French wounded men.
