    CAPT. SYLVESTER TURPEN

Capt. Sylvester Turpen died Monday and was buried at Bunnell cemetery Wednesday morning. The funeral services were held by Rev. W. B. Sultz, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Henry A. Langton. On the 30th of this month Capt. Turpen would have passed three score year and ten. He was born in Ohio and came to Indiana in 1832, living the major part of his life in Tipton, being engaged in the timber business. In politics he was a democrat, and was honored by his party by being elected as clerk of Tipton county for eight years. He served gallantly during the late rebellion as Captain of Company C, 101st Reg. Ind. Infantry. Captain Turpen was twice married, Jap Turpen the famous correspondent of the Indianapolis Sentinel and a pension commissioner under President Cleveland, being an issue by his first wife. Those of his children who are yet living are Mrs. C. V. Paul, of Indianapolis, Mrs. Hattie Jones, of Natches, Mrs. H. A. Langton and Samuel Turpen of Frankfort. He located in this city three years ago, being engaged with his son-in-law, H. A. Langton, in the timber business. Captain Turpen's second wife, who still survives , was in precarious condition of health during the early part of the week. She lies at the residence of Mrs. Langton, and was reported much better as we go to press.
