About Sylvanus Warfield
Sylvanus Warfield, Sr. was born abt. 1755 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, a son of Richard Warfield, Jr. and Hannah [Hamutel] Marriott. Sylvanus married Patience Kirby on 30 Jan 1778 in Baltimore County, Maryland [Maryland Marriages, 1655-1850]. They appear to have had at least two sons together: Sylvanus, Jr. [proven in Hampshire County Tax List Records] and possibly Matthias [not proven, needs research]. Possible sons James and Richard are also listed in Hampshire County Tax List Records in 1801 and 1804, but additional research is needed to prove]. His wife Patience appears to have likely died prior to 1800-1805.
Sometime prior to 1800, Sylvanus had migrated to Hampshire County, [West] Virginia and is listed in the Personal Property Tax Lists from 1800-1814, in the "Lower District" of Hampshire County. Also appearing on the Hampshire County Personal Property Tax Lists are his son Sylvanus, Jr. [1806 & 1807 Tax Lists].
Records appear to support a probable 2nd wife of Sylvanus Warfield, Sarah Flora, daughter of Thomas Flora (1735-1811) of Hampshire County, Virginia. They likely married sometime around 1804/5, but certainly well before the 1810 Census. His daughter, Sarah Warfield was listed in Morgan County, Virginia records in the disposition of her father's estate. [Morgan County was formed from part of Hampshire and Berkeley Counties in 1820].
Sylvanus, Sr. appears in the 1810 & 1820 Census records in Hampshire County; in 1810 it appears to have included him, his wife, 3 young sons and 2 daughters; in 1820, it lists him with 4 sons and 2 daughters. Additional research is needed to identify all of his children.
On 3 January 1818, Sylvanus Warfield, Sr. acquired a 102¾ tract of land "on a branch of Crooked Run a drain of little Cacapehon [River] from Robert McBride, which he later assigned to Sheriff Edward McCarty on 16 April 1822. That appears to be the last record of him in Hampshire County.
Sylvanus Warfield Sr. died sometime after he assigned to Edward McCarty, Sheriff of Hampshire County, the tract "which I now live containing one hundred and fourteen acres" on on 16 April 1822. He appears to have died without a will, as it does not appear in Hampshire County records searches. His son Sylvanus Warfield, Jr. may have pre-deceased him, and died abt. 1818 according to some researchers [no records to support], and he is apparently not listed in the 1820 Census. Sylvanus Warfield, Jr. served in Capt. George Kisling's Company in the War of 1812.
Sylvanus' son Mathias Warfield does not appear in Hampshire County, [West] Virginia records and he appears to have migrated to Tennessee prior to 1818.
Additional research is needed on this family.
