Letter, Bob Mickelson, Jr. [grandson of Katherine's sister], to Reece Mayer, January 1985
Michael Mayer worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad Pullman Car Division in Pgh at the old Ft. Wayne yards. So did William Schnellbacher, Aunt Kate's husband. They were cabinet makers and did some of the fancy wood trim in the old railroad cars.

Aunt Kate Schnellbacher was well known to me. When I was little she baby sat with me many times. When I got older I visited her frequently. When she was in her 70's she fell and broke her hip. It never healed properly and she lived with Mother, Dad and me for several years. She was mostly bedridden. She finally went to a nursing home where she died. I don't know her exact age but do know she was over 80.

The parents of grandmother Mayer, our great grandparents, are buried in Voegtly Cemetery (German isn't it?) here in Pgh. The wording on one headstone is unreadable, it is evidently an older marker made of soft stone and is weather worn. [Marker for Conrad Reusswig The other marker reads:

J. Magdalena Reusswig
Born Aug. 9, 1824
Died Dec. 18 1896

Aunt Kate Schnellbacher is buried on the same plot but has no headstone.

Letter, Reece Mayer, 3 February 1992
When I was a kid, my aunts talked of their Aunt Kate and Aunt "Lizzie" Lickertt. [Actually an older cousin, not an aunt.] Aunt "Kate" married William Schnellbacker.

Reece Mayer, Aug. 1984
Anna Marie Magdalena Reusswig Mayer had an older sister, Katherine Reusswig Schnellbecker, who died in Pittsburgh Jan 15, 1942. No children.

Aunt Kate (Kathryn) Reusswig Schnellbecker seemed to be a caring older sister. Not having any children of her own, she helped her younger sister Lena's children a lot. She sent money and clothes out to Roseberry for Aunt Bertha, the oldest girl in Idaho, to go to school at Idaho's Albion Normal School. This after Bertha graduated from Roseberry Hi School. After two yrs, Bertha had her teaching certificate. She went to teaching right off, and per Aunt Kate's instructions, Bertha paid to put Frieda thru Albion Normal instead of repaying Aunt Kate. This went right on down the line, with Hilda, then Marie, and finally Irma, the youngest. All five received teaching credentials after 2 yrs at Albion. Bertha, Frieda and Hilda taught in elementary schools all their working careers, and never married. Marie and Irma taught a couple years or so but quit, they didn't like it.
