  2. ↑ «i»Surname (Bruwer, Bruwel or Bruere) derived from a shrub called brueria. Stamvader is Etienne Bruere of Blois in France. Left Europe from the port Delfshaven in the Netherlands on 31 December 1687 on the ship Voorschooten and arrived in the Cape in 1688. He worked as a wagon builder . In 1690 he married Esther du Ruelle daughter of Daniel de Ruelle. He remarried with Anne of Susanne du Puis of du Puy in Amsterdam in the Netherlands on 19 February 1702 (6 children from the marriage).

    In 1694 the farm "Rust en Werk" in Dal Josefat was allocated to Etienne and in 1712 the farm "De Veerkeyker" south of Slangenhoek near Worcestor.«/i»
