Susan Thompson was born on 28th July 1835 at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, daughter of Hannah Thompson, formerly Swallow, and her husband William Thompson, a labourer. At the time of her birth the family was living at Susan's maternal grandparents house at Hollybush, and she was baptised the same day as her cousin Sarah Swallow, her mother's brother's William's daughter.

Susan appears in both the 1841 and 1851 census living with her parents and siblings in different parts of Wheathampstead parish. She has yet to be researched after 1851.
