Susan Parsons was baptised on 24th May 1812 at Letchworth in Hertfordshire, the eldest of six known childred of George and Mary Parsons. The family moved from Letchworth fifteen miles south to Kimpton some time between 1815 and 1819, and Susan later appears to have been uncertain as to where she had actually been born - giving her birthplace sometimes as unknown, sometimes, Bedfordshire, sometimes Hertfordshire and on one occasion Baldock, Hertfordshire.
When Susan was about 18 years old, she married a Thomas Dunham. The 1841 census finds them living together at Wheathampstead. Thomas died in 1843, aged 38. The following year, Susan remarried a James Groom, with whom she had at least two sons.
Susan has yet to be traced after 1871.
