In Amity, N. Y., March 23d, 1864, of chronic diarrhea, Deacon Stephen R. Smith, in the 78th year of his age. He was born in Berlin, Rensselaer Co., N. Y., where in early life he made profession of religion. Afterward, and while yet young, he moved to Alfred, N. Y., and united with the First Church, but was one of the number who subsequently united and formed the Second Church of Alfred. After this he removed into the town of Amity, and united with the church in Scio, of which he was a member at the time of his death.
Deacon Smith was an excellent man and efficient Christian, winning the confidence of all who knew him. His death will be deeply felt by his family, the little church of which he was a member, and the neighborhood in which he lived. But in Jesus he rests; and we say, Rest, Brother!
