Sylvanus Carpenter Smith, son of Dea. Stephen V. and Hannah Baker Smith, was born in East Valley, Alfred, N. Y., January 23, 1830, and died at his home in Farina, Ill., April 24, 1910.
He was converted and joined the Second Alfred Church in 1847, under the ministry of Eld. James H. Cochran, assisted by Eld. John Green. Mr. Smith was married to Lucinda M. Stillman, March 20, 1852. To them were born two children, Willard M., and Mary Adaline. Mrs. Smith died in 1870, and their daughter in 1875. Not long after the death of his daughter Mr. Smith was married to Miss Charlotte M. Smith of Albion, Wis. She died February 7, 1899. He married Mrs. Lois Burdick Casterline at Milton Junction, Wis., December 23, 1899. She died December 21, 1901.
Brother Smith came West in 1845[?], living at Albion, Wis., and in other places until 1865, when he came to Farina, where he has since made his home most of the time. Brother Smith became one of the constituent members of the Farina Seventh-day Baptist Church at its organization, April 14, 1866, and up to the time of his final sickness he was a faithful attendant at the preaching services, the Sabbath school, and the prayer meetings, and seldom failed to do service when opportunity offered. With advancing years his love for the Bible, the church, the denomination and the Recorder increased, and his friends noted with pleasure his spiritual growth.
Memorial services were held at the church, April 26, conducted by his pastor, assisted by Elder Bascom of the Methodist Church.
