After his parents died, Stephen went to live with the family of his uncle, William Pettypiece in Concession 7 of Anderdon Township. He farmed in Anderdon Township until about 1885. At that time, he and his family moved into the town of Amherstburg. Stephen worked for the Detroit-Windsor Ferry Company for more than 40 years and was, in later years, in charge of the Amherstburg dock.
