Old Taverns of Collins By Carletta Wood and Nora Johnson Brown March 19, 1936 Contributed by Marilyn Bobseine <[email protected]>

The ten years of the Smith Bartlett regime in Collins Centre House were gay ones. There were two daughters in the household and to the youth of the village all its tan bark walks led to the tavern where most of the town's social activities were cradled. Ice cream, warm sugar and strawberry festivals were planned for the church. There were plays, and, in the day of its popularity , the pantomime, The Mistletoe Hung on the Castle Wall. Concerts were arranged and the fine Atwood and Matthews voices took the arias in Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Jury .Croquet were set in the west lawn and a dancing platform stretched under the trees on the east. The most casual gathering brought Stephen Knight and his violin from the red house next door and the dance was on. The wonder was how Smith found time or place to carry on his business or hotel keeping.
