Biography

STEPHEN JONES b. ± 1642, cooper, arrived at Oyster River by 1660. On 19 Mar. 1665-6 he took F. O. 15 May 1672, and that year. He had grant at Johnson’s Creek. In 1668 he and Stephen Chesley were arrested in connection with Edmund Green’s death.[1]

He married Elizabeth Field 28 Jan. 1663-4. In 1672 (when he was about 30) he and his wife witnessed in the Chesley cattle case. He was the administrator of Williams Beard’s estate in 1676. See Hill (21), Davis (4). Lists 362b, 363abc, 356m, 311c, 365, 366, 359a, 54, 49, 92.[1]

He was last alive in 1680 when Jeremiah and Samuel Jordan were reaping for him but dead by 1682 when his widow was taxed. She died 10 Mary 1705-6 after a long illness. Lists 52, 96.[1]

  2. Elzabeth, b. ± 1672-3, m. Lt. Jos. Roberts. In Aug. 1756, ag. 83, she dep., ‘when liv. with my fa. 65 or 70 y. ago on Jones’s Neck, Durham’; liv. 1757.
  3. Joseph, b. ± 1674.
  4.  ?William, m. Mary Chesley (5).[1]
