Last Will and Testament of Squire Vest:

In the name of God, Amen. I Squire Vest of the County of Boone and State of Kentucky being weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory for which I thank God, and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with, I give and bequeath same in manner following that to say:

1st I desire that all the perishable part of my estate be immediately sold after my decease and out of the money's arising therefrom, all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid or so much thereof as will pay said debts.

2nd I give to my wife Polly after payment of my debts and funeral expenses all my estate both real and personal for during her natural life and after her decease I give the same to my children hereinafter mentioned and to be enjoyed by them forever.

3rd I give to my son Renny seventy acres of land on the South East end of the tract on which I now live, and one black boy named Newton, one horse saddle and bridle and one bed, bedding and bedstead.

4th I give to my son Thomas one dollar

5th I give to my daughter Mary Ann one dollar in cash and one black girl named Leanner and her future increase from this date, to her and her heirs forever.

6th I give to my daughter Elizabeth one black boy named Edmond to her and her heirs forever.

7th All the rest of my estate both real and personal of whatsoever kind it maybe not herein before particularly disposed of I desire may be equally divided among my several children hereafter mentioned, except Washington who is to have slaves which I give to them their executors, administrators and assigns forever. George, Sarah, John, Willliam, Lucy, Washington and Elizabeth. I also desire that Lucy may be sold in the same neighborhood of her husband.

And lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my son Thomas executor of this last will and testament hereby revoking all other or former wills or testaments by me heretofore made in writing whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 23rd day of August 1849.

Squire Vest, age 67, male, white, farmer, real estate value $3,000,born in Virginia, cannot read and write; Polly, 68, female, white, b.Va ., illiterate; Thomas, 27, male, b. Ky; Mary Johns, 24, female, b.Ky.; Salley J. Johns, age 5, by Ky. (Enumeration date 19 Aug. 1850.)

Only Squire and Thomas and "R. Vest" were listed in Boone Co. in 1850. Note that Squire, b. ca. 1783 gave birthplace as Virginia, but Thomas, b. ca. 1797 listed Kentucky as his birth state.
