Facts and Events
Following information came from Stephen Hofer (see end notes for address) In his responses to the 1830 Census, Squire Vest indicates that one of the people living in his household is a female, 10-to-14, which matches perfectly with Lucy's January 1, 1816 birth date. Incidentally, I checked my files to see who the bondsman was on Lucy Vest and John Alexander's marriage, hoping I would discover that it was Squire, her father. It wasn't Squire, but in it's own peculiar way, the answer was almost nearly as persuasive with respect to proving the family connection -- the bondsman was George Vest! Given the Vest family's well-established 18th-19th centuries' love of that particular name, this almost assuredly has to mean one of three things: Lucy Vest's bond was either procured by (1) her grandfather, or (2) her uncle and her father's next-in-order, younger sibling, or (3) Lucy's older brother (he born 1806, she born 1816). Regardless of which way you turn, it looks like additional circumstantial evidence for Lucy being Squire's daughter, particularly when taken together with Squire's will and his census returns. |
