Facts and Events
Sophia White was the daughter of James Worbey and Deborah White. She was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire in about 1866.Following the marriage of her parents in 1866 she became known as Sophia Worbey or Worboys. This was James Worbey's third marriage. In December 1888, Sophia married George Thomas Brazier. The couple had six children, Dorothy Ellen born in 1886, Rosa (Aunt Rose who married Ernest Bray and lived in Hitchin), Daisy, who married Fred Andrews, Lily, who married George Cherry, Gladys, who married Mr Jackson and a son, Johnnie. In the 1871 census, Sophia appears as a four year old scholar living in Hitchin with her parents James Worbey, a 59 year old agricultural labourer and Deborah Worbey, a 44 year old agricultural labourer. Sophia's siblings Emma, age 18, Fanny, 13 and Annie, 10, strawplaiters, Frederick, age 15, an agricultural labourer are also listed. In 1877 an Emma Worbey goes on to marry James Brazier, son of George Brazier and Mary Brazier, nee Lake. It is possibly this Emma, which would add to the complicated links between the families. Interestingly, Sophia's mother, Deborah, had also married a George Brazier in 1875, following the death of her husband James Worbey in 1874. George was a widower and his late wife was Mary nee Lake, who died in 1872. George and Mary had had several children, including Alfred, William, Ellen and another George. Sophia is shown on the 1881 census at the age of 14 living with George and Deborah and some of George's children. Her stepbrother George is 13 at this time, but it was a different George Brazier that Sophia went on to marry. Known to the family as 'Other Bub', Sophia lived to see the birth of her great- great grandson and died in 1956. |
